The Voron Switchwire — whether built from the official BOM or converted from an Ender 3 — is a bedslinger design that presents unique enclosure challenges. Unlike the V2.4 or Trident, which have a fully enclosed frame designed around the enclosure panels, the Switchwire has an open frame with the bed moving in Y (front-to-back) and the gantry moving in X (left-to-right). Enclosing this requires a box that surrounds the entire machine while still providing access for filament changes, maintenance, and print removal.

Enclosure Option 1: The Acrylic Box (Budget, $35-55)

The simplest enclosure is a five-sided acrylic box that sits over the Switchwire. This is ideal for budget builders or those who want a quick enclosure without extensive modifications.

Construction Steps

  1. Cut panels: Have the acrylic cut to size at a local acrylic supplier or order pre-cut panels from Taobao. For a stock Switchwire with a 235x235mm build plate, the enclosure exterior dimensions should be approximately 500mm wide (X), 500mm deep (Y), and 500mm tall (Z). This gives 130mm clearance on all sides of the moving bed and gantry.
  2. Assemble the box: Use Weld-On 4 acrylic cement to bond the four side panels to the top panel. Apply the cement along the seam with a needle applicator — capillary action will draw it into the joint. Clamp with painter's tape for 30 minutes while the joint cures. Do not use silicone or hot glue — these will not create an airtight seal and are chemically incompatible with ABS fumes.
  3. Install the front door: Attach the front panel with two hinges on one side. Install the magnetic latch on the opposite side. The front panel must open fully for print removal — the Switchwire's Y-axis moves the bed forward by approximately 200mm, so the door should swing freely without interfering with the bed.
  4. Cut wiring pass-throughs: Drill holes for the power cable, USB cable (if using USB to Pi), and PTFE filament guide. Use rubber grommets (10mm ID) to seal the cable holes — these cost $1 for a bag of 10 on AliExpress. For the filament pass-through, install an M10 threaded adapter in the top panel and feed the PTFE tube through it directly to the extruder.
  5. Set the enclosure on the printer: The acrylic box simply sits on the Switchwire's base frame. The weight of the acrylic (approximately 2.5kg for 3mm panels) is sufficient to create a basic seal. For better temperature retention, add a strip of 10mm x 3mm silicone foam gasket around the bottom edge ($3-5 for 2 meters on AliExpress).

Pros: Cheap, fast to build, fully transparent for visibility. Cons: Low thermal mass means the chamber will cool rapidly when the door is opened; acrylic is prone to scratching and can warp above 70°C; the box is not flame-resistant.

Enclosure Option 2: Aluminum Frame + Polycarbonate (Standard, $80-130)

For a more permanent and thermally capable enclosure, build an aluminum extrusion frame with polycarbonate panels. This is the approach used in official Voron enclosures (V2.4, Trident) and is the best all-around solution for the Switchwire.

Construction Steps

  1. Build the frame: Assemble the 2020 extrusions into a 500mm cube using corner brackets. The frame sits around the existing Switchwire frame — it does not replace it. Use a machinist's square to ensure all 12 edges are perfectly 90 degrees. Tighten M5 bolts to 1.5 Nm. The frame should be freestanding and stable on the work surface. If the floor is uneven, add adjustable feet to the four bottom corners ($3 for a set of 4 on AliExpress).
  2. Install bottom and top panels: The bottom panel (polycarbonate, 4mm) sits inside the frame on the bottom extrusions. It does not need to be load-bearing — the Switchwire's own frame supports the printer weight. Cut a hole in the bottom panel for the PSU ventilation if using an under-printer PSU mount. The top panel is identical but may have a hole for the filament pass-through adapter.
  3. Install side and rear panels: Use panel clips (either Voron-style printed clips or commercial aluminum extrusion clips) to secure the polycarbonate panels to the 2020 frame. The clips should be spaced at 200mm intervals along each extrusion. Apply silicone gasket to the inner face of each extrusion before installing panels — this creates the airtight seal needed for temperature stability.
  4. Install the front door: The front panel can be hinged on one side or configured as a lift-off panel. For daily use, hinges are preferred. Use 3D-printed hinge brackets that attach to the 2020 extrusion (STL available on the Voron mods GitHub). The door should overlap the frame by 10mm on all sides for proper sealing. Install a handle (a simple 3D-printed loop or metal pull handle, $2-3).
  5. Add exhaust and intake ports: Install a 60mm or 80mm fan port in the top or rear panel for active exhaust. For ABS printing, a 60mm fan exhausting at 10-20% duty cycle through a carbon filter is sufficient to keep fumes manageable. The intake can be a passive filtered port on the opposite side. A set of 60mm fan filters plus mounting hardware costs approximately $5 on AliExpress.
  6. Wire everything through a terminal block: Instead of drilling holes for each wire, install a 12-position terminal block on the rear frame extrusion. Pass all printer wires — 24V power, USB, thermistor extension, fan wires — through a single 25mm cable gland ($2) in the rear panel, then terminate at the terminal block inside. This makes enclosure removal for maintenance significantly easier.

Enclosure Option 3: The LACK Table Hack ($25-40)

The IKEA LACK table enclosure is a well-known community hack for Ender 3 printers. Two LACK tables ($10 each on the used market) stack vertically to create a 550x550x580mm enclosure. The LACK approach is the cheapest enclosure option but requires significant modification for proper temperature control.

Modifications Required

Warning: The LACK enclosure is suitable only for low-temperature printing (PLA, PETG at chamber temps below 45°C). For ABS or high-temp printing, the aluminum-frame enclosure is strongly recommended due to fire safety concerns.
