Complete Voron Self-Sourcing Guide — Save Money by Buying Parts Direct

Sourcing DIY Budget

The most expensive way to build a Voron is buying a pre-assembled kit from a Western distributor. The cheapest is buying everything yourself — directly from the factories and warehouses in China that actually manufacture the components. Self-sourcing can save you 40-60% over kit prices, and 50-70% over buying from local resellers. This guide shows you exactly how. Last updated: May 2025.

Warning: Self-sourcing requires research, patience, and attention to detail. You'll need to verify specifications, check seller ratings, and manage multiple orders. If that sounds like work you'd rather skip, we offer a mini-program that does all of this for you — contact us for a complete BOM with verified sourcing links.

Why Self-Source?

Let's look at a concrete example. A V2.4 350mm kit from Formbot costs ~$750. A self-sourced V2.4 with better-than-kit components costs ~$400-500. Here's a rough breakdown:

Component Category Kit Price Self-Sourced Price Savings
Frame (extrusions + hardware) $100-150 $50-80 ~50%
Motion (rails, belts, pulleys) $150-200 $80-120 ~45%
Electronics (board, PSU, drivers) $150-200 $100-140 ~30%
Hotend + extruder $50-80 $30-60 ~40%
Printed parts $50-80 $30-50 ~40%
Hardware (screws, nuts, spacers) $40-60 $20-30 ~50%
Misc (panels, wiring, fans) $100-130 $60-90 ~40%

The savings are real, but you need to know where to look and what to avoid. Let's go category by category.

Frame Sourcing — 2020/2040 Extrusions

Aluminum extrusions are commodity items. This is the easiest category to self-source.

Estimated cost for V2.4 350: $50-80 for all extrusions, brackets, and T-nuts. This is 50% less than what you'd pay in a kit.

Linear Rails — The Most Critical Component

Linear rail quality determines your printer's motion quality more than any other single component. This is where you should spend the most attention and, if needed, the most money.

Estimated cost for V2.4 350: $80-120 for all rails (vs. $150-200 in a Formbot kit, $250-350 in an LDO kit).

Motion Components — Belts, Pulleys, Bearings

Estimated cost for V2.4 350: $30-50 for belts, pulleys, and bearings.

Electronics — Board, PSU, Drivers, Pi Alternative

Estimated cost for V2.4 350: $100-140 for board, drivers, PSU, and Pi alternative.

Hotend and Extruder

Estimated cost for V2.4 350: $30-60 for hotend + extruder setup.

Printed Parts — JLCPCB and PCBWay

You don't need a 3D printer to build a Voron. Use online printing services:

Estimated cost: $30-50 for a full set of Voron printed parts.

Hardware — Screws, Nuts, Spacers

The Voron BOM calls for a specific mix of M2, M3, M4, and M5 screws, nuts, washers, and spacers. You can buy complete hardware kits from AliExpress for $15-25 — search "Voron hardware kit" and look for sellers like "Mellow Store" or "TriangleLab." The cost of buying individual fasteners is similar and much more work. Just buy a kit.

Safety — Avoiding Counterfeit Parts

Counterfeit components are the biggest risk of self-sourcing. Here's how to stay safe:

Complete BOM Sourcing Checklist

Download the Voron BOM Excel/CSV from the official Voron GitHub repository. Use this checklist to track your sourcing:

  1. Create a copy of the BOM spreadsheet for your model (V0.2, Trident, or V2.4)
  2. Mark each line item as "AliExpress," "Taobao," "Local," or "Print service"
  3. Add estimated cost and actual cost columns
  4. Add a "Seller" column and populate with the AliExpress store name
  5. Add a "Status" column (Ordered, Arrived, Tested, Installed)
  6. Place orders in batches (frame first, then electronics, then motion, etc.) to avoid waiting on one item holding up the build
  7. Test every component as it arrives — don't wait until assembly day

If this sounds like too much spreadsheet work, our mini-program handles the entire BOM sourcing process. We maintain a live database of verified sellers, current prices, and stock levels. Contact us and we'll send you a complete sourcing list with links and pricing.
