Linear rails are the single most impactful component for print quality on a Voron. Worn or misaligned rails cause VFAs (vertical fine artifacts), z-wobble, banding, and dimensional inaccuracy. If your Voron has been running daily for 6-12 months, or if you're chasing ghosting and strange surface artefacts, it's time to inspect and potentially replace the linear rails. MGN7H vs MGN9H vs MGN12H: The number denotes the rail width in mm (7mm, 9mm, 12mm). The "H" suffix indicates the carriage height (taller carriage = higher load capacity). MGN7H is used on V0.2 for its compact size. MGN9H is the standard for Voron XY gantries. MGN12H is used for Z-axis rails where higher load capacity is needed.

Step-by-Step Replacement Procedure

Step 1: Preparation and Disassembly

Before touching any bolts, document your current rail positions. Take photos with a tape measure next to each rail showing its position relative to the extrusion face. Measure and record the distance from the rail end to key reference points (extrusion end, printed part edges). This documentation will save hours during reassembly.

Disconnect power and remove the electronics cover. For V2.4 and Trident: remove the gantry or secure it so it cannot fall during rail replacement. For the X-axis: you'll need to support the toolhead. For Y-axis: support the gantry crossbars. For Z-axis: support the bed (V2.4) or remove it (Trident).

Remove cable chains and any wiring that passes near the rails you're replacing. You don't need to fully disconnect everything — but you need enough clearance to access all rail mounting bolts.

Step 2: Remove the Old Rails

Start by removing the printed parts that mount to the rail carriages (toolhead mount, gantry brackets, Z motor mounts, bed carriage plates). The carriage bolts are typically M3 or M4 button-head screws. Remove them and gently slide the printed parts off the carriages. Set them aside with their screws in labeled bags.

Remove the rail-to-extrusion bolts. These are typically M3x8 or M3x10 socket-head or button-head screws, depending on the Voron model. Work in a pattern (loosen all bolts first, then remove them) to avoid binding. If the rail doesn't come off easily, check for socket-head screws that may be hidden under the carriage — you'll need to slide the carriage to access them.

Once the rail is free, clean the extrusion surface thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol to remove old grease and Loctite residue. Inspect the extrusion surface for burrs or damage. File smooth if needed.

Step 3: Prepare the New Rails

New rails from China-direct suppliers come packed in grease that contains anti-corrosion additives but is not suitable for use. You must clean and re-grease every new rail before installation.

  1. Remove the carriage from the rail (this is optional — many builders clean in-place). To remove: slide the carriage to one end until the ball retainer becomes visible. You can pop the retainer out with a pick and remove the carriage. Note: some preloaded carriages will be difficult to remove and reassemble. If you're not confident, clean in-place.
  2. Flush the rail and carriage with isopropyl alcohol (90%+). Use a syringe or spray bottle to force alcohol through the ball recirculation channels. Move the carriage back and forth while flushing. Repeat until the alcohol runs clear.
  3. Dry the rail with compressed air or by letting it air dry for 30 minutes. Do not use paper towels — lint will contaminate the bearings.
  4. Apply fresh lithium grease (Mobilux EP2 or equivalent) to the rail. A small bead along the rail surface is sufficient — move the carriage back and forth to distribute the grease evenly. Wipe off excess.
  5. The carriage should slide smoothly with light, consistent resistance across the full travel.

Step 4: Install the New Rails

This is the most critical step. Rail alignment determines print quality more than any other factor.

  1. Place the rail on the extrusion in the correct position. Finger-tighten all mounting bolts — do not fully tighten any bolt yet.
  2. Slide the carriage to one end of the rail and tighten the bolt nearest the carriage. Repeat at the other end. This is the "two-bolt method" that establishes the rail's reference line.
  3. Slide the carriage along the full length of the rail. It should move smoothly. If it binds at any point, the rail is not straight relative to the extrusion — loosen the end bolts and re-tighten.
  4. Working from one end to the other, tighten the remaining bolts in a star pattern. Torque to 1.2-1.5 Nm for M3 bolts (about the point where you can't turn with your thumb and forefinger). Use blue Loctite on every bolt.
  5. After all bolts are tightened, slide the carriage the full length again. Any binding means the rail is pulling into a twist — you need to shim the rail or re-align.

Step 5: Shim and Align (If Needed)

If the carriage binds after bolt tightening, the extrusion surface is not perfectly flat. This is common with budget extrusions. The fix: use shim stock (0.05mm, 0.1mm, 0.2mm brass or stainless steel shims) under the rail at the binding location.

  1. Loosen all bolts and re-tighten with the carriage positioned at the binding point.
  2. If binding persists, insert a shim under the rail at the bolt nearest the binding location. Tighten and test again.
  3. Repeat until the carriage slides smoothly across the full axis travel.
  4. Parallel rails (e.g., dual Z rails on V2.4) must be aligned to each other. Use a digital caliper to measure the distance between the two rails at regular intervals. The distance should be within 0.1mm across the full length.

Step 6: Reassemble and Test

Reinstall all printed parts at their correct tension. Do not over-tighten the carriage-to-part bolts — they should be snug but not distorting the printed part. Reconnect cable chains and wiring.

Run the axis through its full range of motion at low speed (50mm/s). Listen for grinding, popping, or uneven sounds. If smooth, increase to normal speeds (200-300mm/s) and run for 10 minutes to distribute the grease and seat the bearings.

Re-run your printer calibration: Z-offset, bed mesh, input shaper, pressure advance. The new rails will have slightly different friction characteristics, which affects resonance tuning. Re-measure your resonance frequencies and update the input shaper configuration.

Binding After Installation

If the carriage binds after bolt tightening, the extrusion surface is not flat or the rail is slightly bent. Try loosening all bolts, pushing the rail firmly against the extrusion with the carriage at the binding point, and re-tightening in sequence. If that doesn't work, use shims. In rare cases, the rail itself is bent — this happens when rails are shipped without proper packaging. Inspect the rail by rolling it on a flat surface before installation.

Noisy Carriage

A clicking or grinding noise usually means insufficient or contaminated grease. Flush the rail with alcohol and re-grease. If the noise persists, the ball retainer may be damaged — this requires replacing the carriage (or the entire rail, as replacement carriages for Chinese rails are hard to find). Occasionally the noise is from the carriage end seals rubbing on the rail surface — apply a tiny amount of grease to the seal lips.

VFAs Still Present After Replacement

If VFAs persist after new rail installation, the issue may be in the belt system (pulley eccentricity, belt tension variation), motor (cogging torque at specific speeds), or input shaper tuning. Try running the printer at different speeds to identify if the VFAs are speed-dependent (motor issue), position-dependent (rail/belt issue), or constant (mechanical resonance).

Carriage Has Play After Installation

This indicates you received a rail with incorrect preload (Z0 or Z2 instead of Z1). Unfortunately, Chinese generic rails often have inconsistent preload. The only fix is to replace the rail with one from a quality supplier. Some builders use PTFE tape under the carriage ball retainer to introduce preload, but this is a temporary hack and not recommended for long-term use.
