A Voron build party is an event where multiple people build their Voron printers together in a shared space. These events combine the efficiency of shared tools and expertise with the camaraderie of building alongside friends. A well-organized build party can turn a 40-hour solo build into a focused 2-3 day group experience where everyone walks away with a working printer and new friendships.
The Concept
The idea is simple: gather a group of people who all want to build Vorons, secure a venue with enough space and power, pool tools and knowledge, and build together. Participants bring their own kits. The organizer provides the venue, communal tools, coordination, and usually food and drinks. Experienced builders circulate to help troubleshoot. By the end of the event, each participant has a fully assembled and calibrated printer.
Benefits of a Build Party
- Shared tools: Not everyone needs to own a torque driver, crimper, or soldering station. The communal tool pool saves each participant $100-200 in tool costs.
- Peer troubleshooting: When someone gets stuck — a tight linear rail, a confusing wiring step, a stubborn firmware issue — there is always someone nearby who has seen it before.
- Moral support: Building a Voron is rewarding but can be frustrating. Group energy keeps everyone motivated through the tough parts.
- Knowledge sharing: Participants bring different backgrounds and expertise. A wiring expert can help with harnesses while a Klipper expert handles firmware. Everyone learns from each other.
- Serial party: At the end of a build party, everyone can submit their serial requests together. Getting your serial number at the same time as your build buddies is a special experience.
Planning the Event
Venue Selection
The venue is the most important decision. Requirements:
- Space: Each builder needs a workbench approximately 2m x 1m. For 5 builders, you need at least 10 square meters of bench space plus room for a communal tool table and walking space.
- Power: Each Voron build needs at least 2 power outlets (one for soldering iron, one for test power supply). Plan for 3-4 outlets per builder plus outlets for the tool station.
- Lighting: Bright, even lighting. Overhead LED shop lights or large windows. Building a Voron involves looking at small fasteners and wire markings.
- Climate control: A full day of building generates body heat and soldering fumes. Ventilation is important. Air conditioning or heating depending on season.
- Suggested venues: Maker spaces (ideal — already set up with benches and tools), garages (good if weather cooperates), community center meeting rooms (check power availability), or a large living room (for small groups of 3-4).
Capacity and Group Size
- Ideal group size: 4 to 8 builders. This is large enough for good energy and diverse expertise, but small enough that one organizer can manage logistics.
- Minimum: 2 builders (still worth it for shared tools and troubleshooting).
- Maximum: 12-15 builders for a large event with multiple organizers. Beyond that, coordination becomes difficult and the ratio of experienced builders to novices drops too low.
- Rule of one workbench per printer: Do not try to share benches. Builders need dedicated space to lay out parts and work without interfering with each other.
Date and Duration
- Allow 2-3 full days: A first-time builder can complete a Voron V2.4 350mm in approximately 25-35 hours. A build party accelerates this through shared tools and troubleshooting, but 2 full days (16-20 hours) is the realistic minimum.
- Weekend format: Friday evening (setup and social), Saturday (build day 1), Sunday (build day 2 and calibration). Some groups add Monday for larger builds.
- Consider time zones: For virtual build parties, pick a time that works for most participants.
Tool Sharing
The communal tool pool is a key benefit of build parties. The organizer should coordinate:
- Control set: 5-6 sets of hex drivers. These are the most-used tool and should be available for every builder to have their own set at their bench.
- Shared tools (1-2 of each): Soldering stations, wire strippers, multimeters, crimpers, flush cutters, deburring tools, heat guns.
- Specialty tools (1 of each): Torque driver, machinist square, thread pitch gauge, digital calipers for shared measurements.
- Tool labels: Label every tool with colored tape or a marker. Tools will get mixed up. Having labels makes it easy to return borrowed tools.
- Spare consumables: Loctite 242, SuperLube, isopropyl alcohol, solder, flux, heat shrink, zip ties, spare crimp contacts. Have extras of everything that can run out.
- Tool sign-out: For high-value items like torque drivers and multimeters, use a simple sign-out sheet so they do not disappear into someone's kit box.
Attendee Preparation
Ask all participants to complete these tasks before the event:
- Pre-print ABS printed parts: If participants are printing their own parts, they need to be done before the event. The build party is for assembly, not printing. If sourcing from PIF, order 4-6 weeks ahead.
- Pre-sort hardware: Voron kits come with many bags of fasteners. Sorting by size and type before the event saves hours. Provide a hardware sorting guide or checklist.
- Read the manual: Each participant should read the Voron assembly manual at least once before arriving. The build party covers assembly, not teaching someone what an M3x8 screw looks like.
- Bring their own kit: Obviously. But also bring any personal tools they own (especially if they have a favorite hex driver or soldering iron).
- Bring a laptop: For firmware configuration, Klipper setup, and accessing the assembly manual PDF.
- Print the manual: Having a physical copy or tablet with the manual is much easier than sharing a laptop during assembly.
Schedule Outline
Day 1 — Frame and Motion System
- Morning (8:00-9:00): Setup. Arrange benches, distribute tools, check-in participants, review safety.
- Morning (9:00-12:00): Frame assembly. Extrusion layout, T-nuts, corner joints, frame squaring. This step is done together with experienced builders checking squareness before tightening.
- Lunch (12:00-13:00): Catered or potluck. Keep it light — heavy food causes afternoon productivity crashes.
- Afternoon (13:00-17:00): Motion system installation. Linear rails on gantry, Z motors, AB drive frames, belts. This is the most mechanically demanding part.
- Evening (17:00-19:00): Clean up. Optional social dinner for overnight groups.
Day 2 — Wiring and Electronics
- Morning (8:00-12:00): Mainboard mounting, PSU wiring, stepper motor wiring, endstop/sensor wiring. Soldering stations get heavy use today.
- Lunch (12:00-13:00): Catered.
- Afternoon (13:00-17:00): Toolhead assembly (Stealthburner), hotend installation, heater and thermistor wiring, probe installation, cable management.
- Evening (17:00-19:00): First power-on tests. Check that everything turns on without magic smoke. Basic continuity tests.
Day 3 — Firmware and First Print
- Morning (8:00-10:00): Klipper firmware flashing on all MCUs, printer.cfg configuration, bed leveling setup.
- Late morning (10:00-12:00): First homing tests, bed mesh calibration, Z offset tuning.
- Lunch (12:00-13:00): Catered.
- Afternoon (13:00-16:00): First print. A simple calibration cube or Voron test print. Tune extrusion multiplier, pressure advance, and input shaper.
- Late afternoon (16:00-17:00): Serial request party. Everyone submits their Voron serial request together. Photos of all completed printers as a group.
- Wrap up: Clean tools, pack up, celebrate.
Food and Drinks
Building is hungry work. Food planning matters:
- Catering: The simplest option. Order pizzas, sandwiches, or a taco bar. Budget approximately $15-20 per person per day.
- Potluck: Each participant brings a dish. Good for smaller groups but requires coordination to avoid five bags of chips and no protein.
- Snacks: Granola bars, fruit, nuts, chocolate. Easy to eat with greasy hands (after wiping them off).
- Drinks: Water, coffee, tea, soda. Stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol during build hours — soldering irons and alcohol do not mix.
- Dinner (for multi-day events): A group dinner at a nearby restaurant is a great way to unwind and debrief the day's progress.
Troubleshooting Station
Designate one or two experienced builders as the troubleshooting team. Their role:
- Circulate between workbenches to spot potential issues before they become problems.
- Handle difficult tasks like diagnosing electrical faults or tricky firmware configuration.
- Teach techniques rather than doing the work. The goal is for every participant to learn.
- Keep a log of common issues that come up during the event. This helps future build party organizers.
The troubleshooting station should have its own bench with extra tools, spare parts (crimp contacts, fuses, wire, connectors), and a dedicated laptop with Klipper documentation and Discord access.
Post-Build: Serial Request Party
One of the most rewarding moments of a build party is when everyone submits their serial request together. The Voron serial number is a badge of completion. Taking group photos of all the finished printers makes for a great community post on Reddit and Discord.
- Set up a photo station with good lighting and a clean background.
- Take photos of each printer individually and a group shot.
- Coordinate serial request submissions so they happen around the same time. Some builders may need an extra day for tuning — that is fine.
Virtual Build Parties
Not everyone can travel to a physical build party. Virtual build parties are an alternative:
- Use a Discord voice channel or video call as the main gathering space.
- Share screens for firmware configuration help.
- Use a document camera or phone stream for showing assembly techniques.
- Keep the channel open for the full build duration so participants can ask questions in real time.
- Schedule specific check-in times (morning start, lunch, end of day) to maintain momentum.
- Virtual parties work best for experienced builders helping novices, and for firmware/software setup where screen sharing is most valuable.
Voron Build Party Stories from the Community

- Having more experienced builders than novices makes the event run smoother. A 2:1 ratio of experienced to first-time builders is ideal.
- Build parties with a mix of Voron models (V2.4, Trident, V0) are more interesting but harder to coordinate because the assembly steps differ.
- Pre-sorting hardware before the event is the single biggest time-saver. Builders who showed up with unsorted kits spent 2-3 hours just organizing before they could start building.

- Venue: $0 (free garage or home) to $200/day (rented community space). Split among 5-10 people, that is $20-40 per person per day.

Organizing a Voron build party takes effort, but the results are worth it. Participants leave with a fully functional printer, new skills, and friendships that extend beyond the event.
