Build Materials Reference
Your build plate surface is the single most impactful upgrade for print adhesion and first-layer quality on a Voron. The right choice depends on what materials you print, whether you run an enclosed chamber, and your tolerance for maintenance. This guide covers every common build plate option for Voron printers — PEI (smooth and textured), G10/FR4 garolite, PEX, spring steel sheets, and glass — with adhesion properties, temperature limits, durability notes, and where to buy them. PEI — Smooth vs Textured
Polyetherimide (PEI) is the most popular build surface in the Voron community. It comes as a thin sheet bonded to spring steel or applied as a removable sticker. PEI offers excellent adhesion when hot and self-releases as the part cools — no glue or tape needed for most materials.
Smooth PEI (Smooth Sheet)
- Adhesion: Excellent for ABS, PLA, and PC. Parts stick firmly at bed temperature and pop off when cool (below 40C).
- PETG Warning: PETG can bond aggressively to smooth PEI and damage the coating on removal. Use a glue stick or hairspray as a release agent if printing PETG on smooth PEI.
- Surface finish: Glossy bottom layer on the part.
- Durability: The PEI coating scratches over time. Fine scratches from nozzle drag or part removal reduce adhesion gradually. Resurface with fine steel wool or 400-grit sandpaper to restore.

Textured PEI (Powder-Coated)
- Adhesion: Very good for ABS, PETG, and TPU. The textured surface provides mechanical grip plus chemical adhesion. Slightly less holding force than smooth PEI for PLA and PC.
- PETG Safe: Textured powder coating is less prone to aggressive PETG bonding. Still recommended to use a light glue stick layer as insurance.
- Surface finish: Matte textured bottom layer that hides first-layer imperfections well.
- Durability: Significantly more durable than smooth PEI. Powder coating is harder and resists scratches from nozzle drag. Avoid scraping with metal spatulas.

G10/FR4 Garolite
G10 (also called FR4 garolite) is a fiberglass-epoxy laminate that has become a favorite among Voron owners printing high-temperature materials. It is rigid, extremely flat, handles temperatures beyond 200C, and costs a fraction of PEI sheets.
- Adhesion: Excellent for ABS, ASA, Nylon, Polycarbonate, and other high-temp materials. Adhesion improves as the sheet heats up. For ABS and ASA, parts adhere firmly at 100-110C and release as the bed cools below 60C.
- PLA/PETG: Works but can be over-adherent. Use a thin layer of glue stick as release agent for PLA and PETG.
- Preparation: New G10 sheets come with a smooth glazed surface. Scuff with 120-220 grit sandpaper in a cross-hatch pattern to improve adhesion. Wipe clean with isopropyl alcohol before each print.
- Mounting: G10 is not magnetic. It must be clamped to the bed with binder clips (V0.2), attached with thermal tape, or fixed using a vacuum bed system. For Voron V2.4 and Trident, many users cut a G10 sheet to size and secure it with silicone thermal pads and edge clamps.
- Durability: Nearly indestructible. G10 does not warp, does not scratch easily, and does not degrade with high heat. A single sheet can last years of heavy printing.
- Where to buy: McMaster-Carr (part #8501K), Amazon (garolite sheets), Fabreeko, MatterHackers. A 300x300mm sheet costs around $10-15.
PEX (Spring Steel Sheets)
PEX (a modified PEI polymer) is a softer, more compliant build surface sold by Prusa as an upgrade. It offers strong adhesion with easier part release than standard PEI.
- Adhesion: Very good for ABS, PLA, PETG, and TPU. PEX has a slightly tacky feel when heated that grips parts firmly. Releases cleanly as the bed cools.
- PETG: Better release than smooth PEI. A light glue stick layer is still good practice for large PETG parts.
- Temperature limit: ~120C. PEX softens above 120C, making it unsuitable for very high-temp nylon or PC printing.
- Durability: PEX is softer than PEI and scratches more easily. Avoid scraping with metal tools. Fine scratches can be polished out with 0000 steel wool.

Spring Steel Sheets (Magnetic Platform)
Spring steel is the carrier material, not the adhesive surface itself. Nearly every modern Voron build surface uses a spring steel sheet bonded to PEI, PEX, or a powder coating. The spring steel sheet attaches magnetically to the aluminum bed via a flexible magnetic sticker.
- Advantage: Quick part removal by flexing the sheet. No scraping, no prying. This is the standard Voron approach and recommended for all new builds.
- Magnetic sticker: Use 0.5mm thick high-temp magnetic sheet (rated to 120C+). Apply to the clean aluminum bed, trim to size, and press firmly. Allow 24 hours for the adhesive to cure before use.
- Sheet thickness: 0.5mm spring steel is standard for Voron beds. Thicker sheets (0.7-1.0mm) resist flex and reduce first-layer consistency. Thinner sheets (0.3mm) flex easily but may warp in the magnetic field.
- Corner alignment: Print corner clips or use silicone bumpers to keep the spring steel sheet aligned during prints. Some users add alignment pins to the bed.

Glass Beds
Glass beds are common on cheap printers but rarely used on Vorons. They work but have several drawbacks in a Voron context:
- Adhesion: Poor without adhesive. Glass requires glue stick, hairspray, or Blue Painter's Tape for most materials. ABS has particularly poor adhesion on bare glass.
- Thermal conductivity: Glass is a thermal insulator. Expect slower heating times and temperature gradients across the bed surface. Voron owners with glass beds often report 5-10C temperature differences from center to edge.
- Weight: A 300x300x4mm borosilicate glass sheet weighs ~800g. The added mass increases ringing and limits acceleration. This is the main reason Voron avoids glass.
- Durability: Glass can shatter from thermal shock if a cold part falls on a hot bed. Borosilicate glass handles thermal cycling better than standard soda-lime glass but is still fragile.
- When to use glass: Only if you need a perfectly flat, rigid surface and are willing to accept slower heating and lower accelerations. Some users with very warped aluminum beds use glass as a flatness overlay.

Adhesion Properties Comparison
ABS and ASA
- Best: G10/FR4 garolite (sanded) and smooth PEI
- Good: Textured PEI (powder-coated), PEX on spring steel
- Adequate: Glass + glue stick (requires frequent reapplication)
- Tip: ABS and ASA release best when the bed cools below 45-50C. Never pry hot parts off — let the bed cool naturally.
PLA
- Best: Smooth PEI on spring steel
- Good: Textured PEI, PEX, G10 (with glue stick release agent)
- Adequate: Glass + glue stick
- Tip: PLA sticks well to nearly any surface when the bed is at 50-65C. The challenge is avoiding over-adhesion on smooth PEI — let the bed fully cool before removing.
PETG
- Best: Textured PEI (powder-coated) or PEX with glue stick release
- Good: G10 (with glue stick), smooth PEI (with glue stick)
- Risky: Smooth PEI without release agent — PETG can fuse to the coating and peel it off on removal.
Nylon and Polycarbonate
- Best: G10/FR4 garolite (sanded, 100-120C bed)
- Good: Smooth PEI (may require PVA glue stick for nylon)
- Poor: Textured PEI, PEX, glass — generally insufficient adhesion for high-temp materials.
Surface Maintenance
All build plate surfaces benefit from regular cleaning and care:
- Between prints: Wipe with isopropyl alcohol (90%+). Avoid acetone on PEI — it attacks the coating. Acetone is safe for G10 and glass.
- Deep clean: Wash with warm water and dish soap (Dawn) every 10-15 prints. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a lint-free cloth. Oil and plasticizer residue builds up over time and causes adhesion failures.
- Restoring adhesion: For PEI/PEX, lightly sand with 0000 steel wool or 400-grit sandpaper. For G10, re-sand with 120-220 grit when adhesion drops.
- Storage: Store spring steel sheets flat, never bent. Magnetic stickers lose holding force over time if stored with the sheet attached — remove the sheet when the printer is idle.

For most Voron owners, a spring steel sheet with smooth PEI on one side and textured PEI on the other is the ideal setup. Add a separate G10 sheet for high-temperature nylon and PC printing. This combination covers every material you are likely to run in your Voron.
